Double the Pleasure

SO WHERE HAVE WE BEEN THIS SUMMER when we haven't been in Turin at the 40th Annual Bacardi-Martini World Grand Prix, in London at the Plymouth Gin Martini Club summer picnic, in Sweden working on our vodka, or in New Orleans at Southern Comfort's Tales of the Cocktail? We've been at Double Seven! (418 West 14th Street, 212-981-9099).

Lotus' owners Will Regan, David Rabin, Mark Baker and Jeffery Jah spared no expense to open their dream bar across the street from Lotus. You part leather curtains to walk in through an ovoid concrete tunnel. Black cork floors and deep brown suede ceiling mute the ambient noise, so that the chatter settles in a notch below the DJ's music. Crocodile-textured leather covers the bar-top and banquettes. Leather and metal-mesh divider curtains enclose the raised seating area in the rear. 400 blown-glass ornaments are backlit along one wall. The waitresses mirror the classic Playboy Club service from the 70s (in more tasteful and slightly less-revealing uniforms, of course). The drinks are by Sasha Petraske, paired with chocolates by Debauve and Gallais, which is flown in unfrozen from Paris weekly. Well worth the $16 per drink.
