Happy Holiday Cocktails
 
THIS HOLIDAY SEASON, on the eve of the bicentennial of the cocktail, the sesquecentennial of the aperitif and the term mixologist, we've rounded up traditional and contemporary libations from a wonderful mix of cultures and regions.
Whether you're celebrating Christmas, Kwanza, Hannukah, or New Year's you're sure to find a cocktail here to brighten your festivities.
MILK PUNCH
2 oz bourbon whiskey
2 oz milk
1/2 tsp dark rum
1 tb simple syrup (1 cup sugar and 1 cup water, shake in a tight jar or bottle until dissolved)
Shake all ingredients in a shaker with ice. Strain into an ice filled highball glass. Garnish with freshly grated nutmeg.
ANASTASIA
2 oz Heavy Water Vodka (order online at www.astorwines.com)
2 oz fresh-squeezed pink grapefruit juice
0.25 oz spiced tea syrup
1 egg white
2 dashes Regan's Orange Bitters #6 (order online at www.buffalotrace.com/giftshop.asp under "Food" and "Mixes")
Fill a shaker with ice. Add all ingredients. Shake hard until icy cold, about 30 seconds. Pour into a rocks glass filled with ice, or strain into a chilled cocktail glass.
SPICED TEA SYRUP: Combine 1 cup water and 18 whole cloves in a small pot. Bring to a boil and remove from heat. Add 1 darjeeling tea bag and steep for about 5 minutes. Return to heat and add 1 cup sugar and 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon. Heat and stir until sugar is dissolved. Remove from heat and add 1/4 tsp pure vanilla extract. Strain through a coffee filter, cool and store in a tight glass jar until ready to use.
FROSTBITE
1 oz tequila
0.75 oz white creme de cacao
0.75 oz light cream
Shake hard with ice in a shaker. Strain into a cocktail glass. Garnish with a sprinkle of nutmeg. (Thank you, Robert.)
MERRY NEW YEAR
1 oz vodka
1 splash of port, Cointreau or Chambord or your favorite liqueur
4 oz champagne
Shake vodka and liqueur with ice in a shaker. Strain into a champagne flute. Slowly pour the champagne into the flute. Garnish with an orange or lemon twist.
