Mixologist: The Journal of the American Cocktail

The first annual volume of Mixologist: The Journal of the American Cocktail is hot off the presses. A forum for mixology and barware scholars, Mixologist is written by some of the nation's most respected cocktail authorities. This year's volume of Mixologist features works by Dave Wondrich, Ted Haigh, Robert Hess, Gary Regan, Jared Brown, Lowell Edmunds, Paul Clarke, Audrey Saunders, Phil Greene, Anistatia Miller, and Darcy O'Neil.
The never-before-published articles presented in this inaugural 200-page book focus on the origins of six classic cocktails. Additional articles explore the legend of Antoine Amedee Peychaud, creator of Peychaud's Bitters; the history of Plymouth Gin; a definitive and scientific guide to simple syrup; and a look into the classic future of cocktails.
Articles were reviewed by a distinguished editorial board that included Dale DeGroff, Dave Wondrich, Jared Brown, Lowell Edmunds, and Robert Hess. Published by Jared Brown and Anistatia Miller, net proceeds from the sales of Mixologist: The Journal of the American Cocktail will benefit The Museum of the American Cocktail.
HOW IT ALL GOT STARTED
The idea for publishing this scholarly journal of all things relating to Cocktails was born--you guessed it--over Cocktails. At the second annual Southern Comfort Tales of the Cocktails gathering down in New Orleans, a group of us (including Dale DeGroff, Jill DeGroff, Kathy Hamlin, Steve Visakay, Jared Brown, )had convened for pre-dinner Sazeracs at Tujague's. Robert Hess, Dave Wondrich and Anistatia Miller found a table and discussed how it was time for Cocktails and the scholars who love them to have a forum for serious discussions about origins, about the people who created them, about the ingredients, about the business itself. Many of the same dinner group are also founders of the Museum of the American Cocktail, located in New Orleans.
These seeds of thought grew into Mixologist: The Journal of the American Cocktail. The group put out a call for entries with a ridiculously limited deadline--60 days--and hoped for the best. The review board, consisting of Jared Brown, Dale DeGroff, Lowell Edmunds, Hess, and Wondrich sifted through manuscripts whose subjects ranged as far a field as an index of cordial and liqueur densities for use in layering drinks and the origins of the Cocktail shaker. The first volume focuses on the history of cocktails. The second volume will hone its sights on beverage operations and the art of bartending.
So pour yourself your favorite libation, sit back and savor a new world of discovery which I hope you will find in Mixologist: The Journal of the American Cocktail. Join us in celebrating one of America's most enduring icons, the Cocktail.
CALL FOR ENTRIES
MIXOLOGIST 2: The Journal of the American Cocktail
Deadline for article submissions: 1 October 2005
Submission Guidelines
The year 2006 marks the 200th anniversary of the American Cocktail. That makes it a good time to remember that the world of Cocktails would be nothing without the persistent attention to detail of the bartenders and mixologists who create and serve these lovely libations. It takes more than a knowledge of shaking, stirring, muddling and swizzling to run a tight bar.
For the featured section of the upcoming Mixologist 2:The Journal of the American Cocktail, we're looking for well-researched papers on beverage operations, ranging from the process of Cocktail menu development, bar set-up and staff training, to the selection of bar equipment, glassware, bar food, spirits, liqueurs and garnishes.
For the "And Other Things" section, we welcome papers on all other subjects, from the origin of a classic Cocktail, the biography of a great bartender, a scientific study of a Cocktail ingredient or mixing technique, a recently published book on Cocktails or Cocktail history, the art of collecting cocktail books or barware, and just about anything in between.
All submissions will be subjected to a review process (read by a panel of authorities on the subjects of Cocktails and bar operations), before a decision is made on its inclusion. All writers of accepted entries will be required to sign a publication agreement.
The next Mixologist 2:The Journal of the American Cocktail will be published on 1 April 2006. We look forward to seeing you in its pages.
